In 1780 Britain, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) was forced to join the army in order to evade smuggling and flee to fight on the American battlefield, leaving the beholder Elizabeth (Heida Reed) behind. . Three years later, Ross returned home to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War. He found that his father was dead, his father's mine was closed, other family mines were laying off workers, the house was dilapidated, and even Elizabeth would marry his cousin Francis (Kyle Soller). . Ross decided to start a new life in depression. He accidentally rescued the savage country girl Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson played by Eleanor Tomlinson) in the market and hired her as a maid.
